Personal Goals Review 2022 #2

3 min readJul 9, 2022

I’ve done this for a few years now. At the end of 2021, I set out some personal goals for 2022. It’s now time to review progress at Q2.

TL;DR: Cycling back on track, reading going ok and wrote a simple bit of software.

>> Read 50 books. Slightly under target, 23 books read so far. This year I also added some sub-targets:

  • Read three Victorian classics. Under target — no classics read so far.
  • Read three books to educate myself more about race. 1 read so far — Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire by Akala.
  • Finish the long-neglected Biography of Ceasar — no progress. I might have to ditch this target in 2023.

>> Summarise 100% of non-fiction books read. On target. Read and summarised 9 so far.

>> Cycle 4000 miles. On target at last! 2,1200 miles cycled so far. May and June were good months, not least because I got a new bike and took every opportunity I could to get out on it. Need to step it up again this month after a slow start.

What I’m pleased about is I feel like I’m about getting back to the level of fitness I had before breaking my collar bone and having a long long 6 months off the bike.

>> Cycle a Gran Fondo each month. Over target — 9done so far. Feeling very good about doing that distance now, and have done several longer rides, including a few 100 mile rides.

>> Write 10 Blog Articles. No progress since Q1. 3 done so far. A few in draft and a few ideas, but nothing published.

>> Get 2,500 Twitter Followers. 2020 currently. But still lagging well behind my colleagues Debbie and Simon, with Heidi making rapid strides as the most increased 5 months in a row.

>> Get to my target weight. Some progress towards target weight, slightly under trajectory. Q2 was going quite well until a few things knocked me off routine. 6 months to go to get there, so time to put it right.

>> Write weeknotes. No target (intentionally).

>> Write two “Thought” Pieces. No progress.

>> Write some software. My initial idea set at the end of 2021 was to write a plug in for Audacity. I did do a bit of research on the framework and started searching for a few examples, but didn’t hit on anything immediately that I could use. However, I did write a bit of Python to scape some webpages and also some C# to automate opening a few browser pages at one time with the same topic on mutiple site. Very simple stuff, but still allowed me to scratch the itch a bit.
